The Argos controlled the game from the beginning and got off 15 shots in the first half to none for Georgia Southwestern. The great defense and attacking offense continued in the second half, as the Argos kept the Hurricanes from getting any shots on goal.Coach Joe Bartlinski was very pleased with the performance, especially with the defensive effort. “This (Georgia Southwestern) is a team very capable of scoring and we didn’t allow a shot; basically everybody stepped up today.” Georgia Southwestern scored against Metro State in their opener and nearly had a couple other goals, which really shows how well the Argos played to prevent them from getting any shots on goal. While most people watching the game might think that it was the UWF offense that controlled the game, Coach Bartlinski was clearly most pleased with the defense, and that of course gives the offense great chances to attack.Dernelle Mascall (So. / Trinidad) got the scoring started at the 34 minute mark in the first half, with a shot off a cross pass from Laurel McKenzie (Fr. / Harvest, Ala.), and then concluded her evening by scoring with a dazzling one on one move with the goalie to put UWF up 6-0. That goal gave her a hat trick of three goals for the afternoon. Mascall and teammate Anastasia Prescott (So. / Trinidad) played with the Trinidad National Team and missed some of the Argos preseason, and Coach Bartlinski felt she had a `coming out performance’ and her legs looked real strong for everything she had been through lately.McKenzie followed her assist on the first goal, to take a breakaway pass from Naila Owens (So. / Jacksonville, Fla.) to score the second first half goal at 42 minutes, and the Argos lead 2-0 at the half. Owens then scored her own goal one minute into the second half off a long pass from Jodi Galucci (So. / Stuart, Fla.). Galucci would get two more assists before the game ended. While Georgia Southwestern worked very hard to stay in the game with the Argos, it was clear in the second half that they just were worn down by the superior intensity and nifty footwork of the Argos. Anna Kaye Logan (Fr. / Bradenton, Fla.) and Alex Avram (Fr. / Hoover, Ala.) also scored goals for the Argos in the second half on route to the 8-0 win. The great defensive effort was primarily the work of Prescott, Lura Carter (Jr. / Tallahassee, Fla.), and Marie Hastings (Sr. / Gainesville, Fla.).The win evened the Argos record at 1-1, following the opening season loss to Metro State. Coach Bartlinski was not disappointed with the first game loss, as he felt that the game was closer than it appeared, and the difference was a couple headers that Metro won and the Argos just missed. With the win today, Bartlinski was real pleased to see his team do some of the things they had been working in practice. “We worked our flanks (wide play) real well, and ran some of our set pieces just as we prepared, and that was great to see today.”West Florida played 16 kids in the first half and their depth may become important as the season moves on. Overall the Argos played 20 kids in the match, and with a young team that has room to build, the game experience is great, especially with top ranked teams on the schedule. The Argos travel this next weekend to play against St. Leo on Sunday at 12:30 pm. UWF played St. Leo twice last year, with both matches ending in a tie. The second match up was in the Regional semifinals, and the Argos won the match in the penalty kicks following the regulation tie. Coach Bartlinski is looking forward to the match and explained that, “we will have to match their (St. Leo ) intensity, they are a highly spirited team,” so it should be another great test for the young Argos.
