After a season in which they dominated the Premier League, winning the title by seven points, Chelsea are looking far from comfortable after just one game of the new campaign. The 3-2 loss to Burnley on Saturday, in a game where Chelsea ended with nine men on the field, was a disappointing start. But the problems at the club go deeper than just one setback on the field.Nor is the standoff with Brazilian-Spanish striker Diego Costa the source of the malaise at Stamford Bridge. It does, however, point towards the possible source of Chelsea’s problems – tension between the manager, Antonio Conte, and the club’s hierarchy.Chelsea’s Russian owner, Roman Abramovich, remains, as always, silent in the background. But Conte has done little in his public statements to challenge the view that he is unhappy with the club’s transfer dealings. The club have invested a combined 124 million pounds ($159.59 million) on Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, Antonio Rudiger from AS Roma and Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco, but Conte has been clear that he has a “small squad” for the double challenge of a title defence and a Champions League campaign.Reuters PhotoAsked on the eve of the season why more new players have not been bought, he said: “Everyone is trying to do their job but, for sure, I think this question is good for the club — not for me.”What do they tell me? We have to wait for the best moment, the best solution. We have to wait,” he said.advertisementThe sale of midfielder Nemanja Matic to title rivals Manchester United appeared to many a strange decision. Whether the club or the manager wanted him to leave is a matter of dispute.United manager Jose Mourinho – a former Chelsea manager – said on Sunday, after Matic’s excellent debut in a 4-0 win over West Ham, that he had not sought to unsettle his former player and that something happening at Chelsea opened the door for the move.”It depends on what is happening, or what was happening behind doors,” Mourinho said. “I don’t know.”But I didn’t disturb him, I didn’t disturb Chelsea. I never thought it was possible unless something special was happening, and it looked like something was happening because his agent told me, ‘You can have him; you just have to pay’.”Conte was widely reported to be disappointed that his club couldn’t sign Romelu Lukaku, who moved from Everton to United, and there are suggestions that the club is divided over what kind of player they should be targeting. But there are appears to be something of a “briefing war” now under way at the club.A day after Costa gave an interview criticised the club, on Tuesday, The Times quoted unidentified “senior Chelsea sources” as saying Conte wanted only experienced players ready to do a short-term job, but the club was more interested in younger players.Chelsea’s squad may still be too small, but that raises the question of why the club continue to off-load so many of their young players.Nathan Ake went to Bournemouth and Nathaniel Chalobah to Watford. Liverpool signed Dominic Solanke. In addition, the Blues have, this off-season, loaned out Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tammy Abraham, Kurt Zouma, Izzy Brown and Kasey Palmer. The squad will be stretched even thinner for Sunday’s game at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur.Captain and defender Gary Cahill and Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas were both sent off against Burnley and will be suspended for the London derby.
TweetPinShare0 Shares PIRAEUS – Olympiacos scored an impressive 86-75 win over the visiting Turkish team Efes Anadolu March 26 in the European basketball tourney.Behind young Ioannis Papapetrou, the Reds stopped a losing skid and assured itself of a top three finish in its bracket and have a chance to get into the top two in Moscow next week against the tough CSKA.It was a tight game against the Turkish team with the score tied 35-35 at the half and Anadolu led 57-53 after three before Olympiacos came back big with 33 points in the final quarter. There were more than 7,000 fans on hand to watch an Olympiacos team depleted by the absence of both guards, sharpshooting Captain Vassilis Spanoulis, and Costas Sloukas, and also of Brent Petway. Still, the Reds shook off a two-game losing streak in the tourney with a barrage of three-point shots in the last period.Stratos Perperoglou, who left Greece to play for Anadolu, led all scorers with 23 while Olympiacos was led by Oscar Lafayette with 17.
TweetPinShare0 Shares ATHENS – Greece’s falling soccer fortunes took another hit when German coach Bernd Schuster said he wouldn’t take the national team post after a verbal deal fell apart. With Greece failing to make the European championship tourney it won in 2004, the Hellenic Soccer Federation (EPO) is looking to resurrect the program after going through two coaches this year.Schuster, who has coached Real Madrid and most recently Malaga, was set to succeed Uruguayan Sergio Markarian and lead Greece’s 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign but the deal fell through over a last-minute hitch, Reuters said.“EPO announced that it has restarted its search for a coach of the national team after a change of attitude from Mr. Schuster relating to a verbal agreement with the federation,” said a brief EPO statement.“Mr. Schuster was asked a while ago to sign a preliminary agreement on the terms that had been clarified in detail and fully agreed. However, on his own initiative and without any prior notice he demanded to change them.“These new requirements suddenly asked by Mr. Schuster were not accepted by EPO and (President] Mr (Giorgos) Gkirtzikis has been authorized by the members of the Executive Committee to continue negotiations with other prospective coaches.”Local media said the dispute was over Schuster’s assistant, as he reportedly didn’t want to work with interim coach Kostas Tsanas, who coaches the under-21 side.Former national team coach Markarian and director of soccer Giorgos Karagounis were let go on Aug. 27.Markarian took over in February from Italian Claudio Ranieri who was sacked after Greece got off to a miserable start in Euro 2016 qualifying, including a humiliating home defeat by the Faroe Islands which then beat the Greeks again to put them at the bottom of the group and out of competition.
NEW YORK — The quartet leaned against the dugout railing with uniformly glum expressions during the ninth inning, Masahiro Tanaka and Dellin Betances crossing their arms, Brett Gardner dangling his over a railing and Chris Young resting his chin on a hand. The New York Yankees expected better this year than elimination in the AL wild-card game. Many others anticipated worse.“When the season started, no one thought we would be here,” Manager Joe Girardi said after Houston eliminated New York 3-0 on Oct. 6.In the first year after Derek Jeter’s retirement, the Yankees ended their two-year absence from the postseason but did not reach the Division Series. They had a seven-game AL East lead in late July but played .500 ball after and finished six games behind Toronto.Adding closer Andrew Miller, shortstop Didi Gregorius, pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and reliever Justin Wilson helped, but not enough. In the end, the Yankees could not overcome titanic late-season slumps by Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner, Alex Rodriguez and Brian McCann.“The way this team played here down the stretch isn’t reflective of what this team looked like for most of the season. That’s the frustrating part,” General Manager Brian Cashman said.New York scored 764 runs, second in the major leagues behind Toronto, and the Yankees’ 212 homers were up from 147 last year. But they lacked timely hitting for stretches and a slump-busting ace.David Price, Zack Greinke, Jordan Zimmermann and Johnny Cueto will be available on the free-agent market, but do the Yankees want a long-term contract with another high-priced pitcher who will be in his mid-to-late 30s in the deal’s latter years? They also could use a right-handed bat with power, preferably at second base. The Yankees were especially vulnerable to left-handers when the switch-hitting Mark Teixeira broke a shin in mid-August and Rodriguez slumped. At 30 years, 31 days, the Yankees began the season with the fifth-oldest roster, according to STATS. Rodriguez returned from a season-long drug suspension to hit 33 homers and Teixeira, 35 years old, rebounded from wrist surgery to hit 31 homers and drive in 79 runs before his injury.“Our stated goal is to definitely try to get younger,” Cashman said. With age comes injuries. Will Rodriguez, who turns 41 next summer, stay healthy for a second straight season?“Depth is very important, no doubt. Guys are going to get banged up,” Teixeira said. “Rest helps. Rest is a part of recovery. It’s a part of performance.”All of the Yankees’ primary starting pitchers were hurt at some point: Tanaka (wrist, forearm), CC Sabathia (knee), Michael Pineda (forearm), Ivan Nova (recovery from Tommy John surgery) and Nathan Eovaldi (wrist). Sabathia, 35 and three years removed from his last top season, left the team to check into an alcohol rehabilitation center on Monday. As starters got hurt, the bullpen got taxed. And New York’s offense pretty much collapsed late in the season. From Sept. 1 on, Rodriguez hit .224. Ellsbury .207, Gardner .198 and McCann .174. The club batting average dropped from .274 in June and July to .236 for the remainder of the season, according to STATS.Changes likely will come from free agents and trades. While Luis Severino (21), first baseman Greg Bird (22) and second baseman Rob Refsnyder (24) showed promise during the second half, Cashman cautioned on expecting additional top pitching help from the minors.“I don’t have anybody coming that is of Severino caliber,” he said.Additional stars could be used, too. Average attendance in the post-Jeter era slid from 42,520 last year to 39,922, and the average viewership on the YES Network fell from 288,000 to 259,000.With major changes, the Yankees’ next game that counts may resemble their last. Their opener is April 4 at home — against the Astros.Players left the clubhouse with a modicum of optimism. “I like what we’re going to have next year,” Teixeira said.(RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer) TweetPinShare0 Shares
TweetPinShare0 Shares NEW YORK — It wasn’t just winning the game. It was keeping the lead that showed the Orlando Magic how far they have come.Nikola Vucevic tied his season high with 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds, leading the Magic to a 107-99 victory over the New York Knicks on the night of Dec. 21.The game was close all the way, with the Knicks never leading but never trailing by more than eight until the Magic made a late 11-2 run.New York was repeatedly within a basket of tying or taking the lead in the fourth, but Vucevic and the Magic kept coming up with timely plays.“A lot of times it was the opposite scenario last year, where we were at the end but we couldn’t close it out,” forward Tobias Harris said. “But now we’re starting to really grow and close out these games.”Vucevic had a pair of baskets and Evan Fournier added a 3-pointer and another basket in the clinching spurt after the Knicks had cut it to 93-92 with 3:25 left. Victor Oladipo finished that decisive run with a breakaway dunk that made it 104-94 with 1:07 to go.Harris scored 20 points and Fournier had 16 for the Magic, who rebounded from a Dec. 20 loss to Atlanta to win for the fourth time in five games.“It’s good for us, especially after a tough loss last night and coming off the back-to-back,” Vucevic said. “To respond this way was great for us. Shows growth, shows we believe in ourselves and I thought we played really well tonight.”Lance Thomas was 9-for-9 and tied his career with 24 points for the Knicks, who had won four in a row and missed a chance to move above .500. Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points despite tweaking an ankle in the second half.“They were hitting important shots at important moments and they were able to maintain the lead, and at the end they just played better,” Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis said.Starting guard Elfrid Payton didn’t play in the second half because of a sore left ankle, but Fournier handled the ball more and Oladipo and rookie Mario Hezonja finished in double figures off the bench as Orlando shot 51 percent from the field.Porzingis had nine points and eight rebounds but shot just 3-for-12.(BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer)
DETROIT (AP) — Chris Chelios is leaving the Detroit Red Wings to return to his hometown of Chicago.Chelios spent a decade with the Red Wings as a player from 1999-2009, and he’s also been an adviser for the team. His Hall of Fame career as a defenseman started in Montreal before he spent eight years with the Blackhawks.“For me, this is an opportunity to move back to Chicago to be closer to family, and in particular my mother,” Chelios said Thursday. “I began to seriously consider moving home last February after the passing of my father. Now that my children have all graduated, it seems like the ideal time for my wife, Tracee, and I to make the move.”Chelios was traded to Detroit in March 1999 and he remained with the Red Wings through the 2008-09 season before finishing his career with a brief stint with Atlanta in 2009-10.“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Red Wings organization over the last 19 years,” Chelios said. “Admittedly, I was skeptical about the 1999 trade that brought me to Detroit. As a Chicago guy who was playing for the Blackhawks at the time, we despised those Detroit teams of the 1990s. After the trade, however, things changed quickly and I began to feel right at home.”Chelios and the Red Wings won Stanley Cups in 2002 and 2008.FILE – In this April 24, 1996, file photo, Chicago Blackhawks captain Chris Chelios congratulates teammate Joe Murphy after Murphy scored the game and series winning goal for the Blackhawks against the Calgary Flames in Calgary, Alberta. The Cup-winning teams in 2002 and 2008 are the obvious highlights, but I’m grateful for every chance I had to put on a Red Wings sweater.”Chelios’ son Jake is a defenseman as well and is in the Red Wings’ organization.Chelios is of Greek heritage. His cousin, Nikos Tselios, also played professional hockey and is a former first round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes. Chelios was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 8, 2013.Chelios grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where his father, Constantine “Gus” Chelios, owned a chain of Greek restaurants. Harare, Sep 10 (AFP) Zimbabwe’s newly sworn-in finance minister on Monday said he planned to reintroduce the Zimbabwe dollar and accelerate plans to repay the country’s debt, in a bid to revive the battered economy. The southern African nation abandoned its currency after it spiralled out of control between 2008 and 2009 during the rule of Robert Mugabe. The country adopted the US greenback and other foreign currencies including the South African rand. But a few years later, with the economy in tatters, US bank notes started to run short. In 2016, Mugabe’s government tried to tackle the chronic shortage of US banknotes by introducing a parallel token currency called “bond notes”, theoretically worth the same as a US dollar. But the bond notes are in reality worth far less than the US dollar.”Ultimately, I want to be very clear, I want to see the Zimbabwe dollar come back, the sovereign currency,” the new finance minister, Mthuli Ncube, told reporters shortly after he was sworn-in.Ncube, 55, a former Oxford university professor and a former vice president of the African Development Bank, has the tough task of reviving an economy wrecked under Mugabe, who was ousted last year.”But currency reform alone is not adequate, it needs a second leg. It works with fiscal policy.”President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was sworn in after his victory in a landmark July election, vowed to make fixing the economy his priority.Ncube also vowed to resolve Harare’s debt with international institutions.”We have plans that we want to make sure that the international financial institutions such as the African Development Bank and the World Bank are fully on board to work with us to resolve the arrears,” he said.advertisementOn Monday Mnangagwa swore in 20 cabinet ministers, 13 deputy ministers and nine provincial ministers. The cabinet includes a former Olympic swimmer, Kirsty Coventry, who is the new sports minister. India put up a great fight despite staring down the barrel on the fifth day but in the end fell short by 118 runs to lose the final Test against England at The Oval on Tuesday.Chasing a mammoth 464 and with three wickets down for 58 going into the final day’s play, India ended up reaching 345 thanks mainly to the efforts of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Ajinkya Rahane.Rahul top-scored with 149 runs and added 118 runs with Rahane (37) for the fourth wicket before teaming up with young Pant to add another 204 runs for the sixth wicket.Oval Test: England overcome Rahul, Pant tons to beat India and clinch series 4-1Pant ended up scoring 114, his maiden Test hundred which he brought up with a massive six against Adil Rashid. But once Rahul and Pant fell, it was all over for India, who may have lost 1-4, but the series scoreline doesn’t reflect the true nature of this series.KL Rahul slams fifth hundred on final day of India-England Test series”Credit has to go to both those young guys for stepping up on this stage. From three wickets down, it take guts. It might not show in the scoreline but both sides played in great spirit.Rishabh Pant announces his arrival with maiden Test hundred”That was an example of two guys not giving up and entertaining the crowd. This has been one of the best series I’ve been involved in, and a great advert for Test cricket,” India captain Virat Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.advertisementNobody gave India a chance in this Test before the final day’s play but Rahul and Pant made sure all three results were possible till the time they were at the crease. Which has been the story of the series throughout the 42-odd days with India coming close but failing to get over the line.Rishabh Pant a work in progress, feel former India wicket-keepersEven at the Oval, for most of the final day, the story was of a spirited Indian resistance that at one point gave them an outside chance of an unimaginable consolation victory but it wasn’t to be after all.Kohli, who ended up as the highest run-scorer with 593 runs in the five matches, also rued the missed opportunities in the final Test and throughout the series which resulted in their downfall at Birmingham, Lord’s, Southampton and Oval.Anderson surpasses McGrath to become 4th highest wicket-taker in Test cricket”We will sit down and think about, if we had taken those opportunities, we missed quite few. When both teams are going for wins, you can have a result that looks like that [4-1], they don’t go for draws.”They played fearless, you hardly have draws in these tense series and that’s what the scoreline shows. I’m not saying it wasn’t a fair scoreline, because they played better than us, but we can take a lot of heart and apply lessons to how we play Test cricket,” Kohli went on to add.Chasing an improbable 464 for victory, India were eventually dismissed inside the last hour for 345, with James Anderson taking the final wicket – his 564th in test cricket, taking him past Australian great Glenn McGrath as the most successful fast bowler of all time. The 36-year-old Anderson received a standing ovation as he walked off with Alastair Cook, England’s most-capped player and record Test run-scorer who marked his 161st and final match on Monday with an emotional century.
Hit hard by an unexpected controversy after the high of the Test triumph, India will look to fine tune their World Cup preparations in the three-match ODI series against an under-fire Australia, beginning in Sydney on Saturday.Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul has provided a big distraction for the Indian team by making “inappropriate” comments on women during a TV show.Rahul was unlikely to get a go owing to both his poor form and the presence of a well-settled opening pair in Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. The bigger question though is regarding Pandya’s absence, for the all-rounder provides crucial balance to the ODI side with his ability to bowl 10 overs as well as bat in the middle order.Pandya’s absence could mean that India might have to rejig their bowling attack. Jasprit Bumrah has already been rested for this series, as well as the tour of New Zealand, and this allows the think-tank to conduct one final experimentation with their bowling attack.Bhuvneshwar Kumar is a shoo-in, and thereafter it depends if Kohli wants to go in with a three-man pace attack to compensate for Pandya’s loss. What time does the 1st ODI between India vs Australia start? The 1st ODI starts at 7:50 AM IST on January 12, Thursday at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney. What TV channel and live stream is the 1st ODI between India and Australia Live Streaming on?Sony SIX and Sony SIX HD in English commentary and Sony Ten 3 and Sony Ten 3 HD in Hindi Commentary. The number of airport security screeners failing to show up for work around the country is soaring as the partial government shutdown goes into its fourth week.No-shows among screeners jumped Sunday and again Monday, when the Transportation Security Administration reported a national absence rate of 7.6 per cent compared with 3.2 per cent on a comparable day a year ago. Monday marked the first business day after screeners did not receive a paycheck for the first time since the shutdown began. At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest, some passengers waited more than an hour to get through checkpoints. The airport reported the long lines on its website Monday morning, showing the hour-plus waits at all three checkpoints in the domestic terminal.”It’s chaos out here,” passenger Vincent Smith said as he stood in a line that snaked through the Atlanta airport’s atrium and baggage claim areas.”This line, I’ve been here about 15 minutes and it has moved 2 feet.”TSA is working with the Atlanta airport and airlines “to maximize all available operational resources at the airport,” TSA spokesman Jim Gregory said. The agency is working with airports and airlines nationwide to consolidate operations and get the most out of resources, Gregory added. He declined to provide absentee figures for Atlanta or other airports, saying that would compromise security by exposing possible vulnerabilities.”Screeners will not do anything to compromise or change their security procedures,” he said. But Smith said he could relate to government workers who don’t show up so they can find other ways to make ends meet.advertisement”If I was a government worker, yes, I would probably call in and try to do something else because creditors don’t care if you’re furloughed or not,” Smith said. “They just want to get paid and with a family of six, you have to do what you have to.”Atlanta’s wait times stretched well beyond what the TSA says most passengers have encountered since the shutdown began.Delta Air Lines, the dominant carrier in Atlanta, and other airlines said they were advising passengers to get to the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international trips.A Delta spokeswoman said airline employees were pitching in by helping manage TSA lines.TSA said that it screened 1.97 million people on Sunday and that 99.1 per cent waited less than 30 minutes, and 93.1 per cent less than 15 minutes. Precheck lines for people who pay a fee for expedited screening averaged less than five minutes, TSA said.A combination of a busy Monday travel day combined with some security lines being closed led to the long lines, airport spokesman Andrew Gobeil said.He said he didn’t know how many security lines were down.A statement from TSA attributed the long waits in Atlanta to “anticipated high volume.”Meanwhile, TSA said it would move officers around the country to deal with local shortages. A few airports are making changes to deal with the shortage of screeners. At Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, a security checkpoint and ticket counter that were shuttered Sunday afternoon in Terminal B will remain closed through Tuesday, a spokesman said. The terminal handles United Express flights. Passengers must go through checkpoints in other terminals, then walk or take a train to planes parked at Terminal B. A spokesman for United Airlines said flights were not affected.Miami International Airport closed one of its concourses for part of Saturday and Sunday, shifting about a dozen afternoon and evening flights each day to other concourses so that TSA workers could adequately staff the other checkpoints.Airport spokesman Greg Chin said TSA was staffing the Concourse G checkpoint on Monday, but airport officials were monitoring the situation and would make more adjustments if necessary. An official with the union representing TSA workers said TSA canceled employees’ vacation requests about a week ago.”Since nobody is getting paid, (TSA officials) don’t want them to take annual leave,” said Cairo D’Almeida, president of a government workers’ union local in Seattle. He said he was asking local food banks if they can help the workers.Gregory, the TSA spokesman said that was not a TSA decision. Under guidelines from the federal Office of Personnel Management, paid time off is cancelled for employees, including the airport screeners, who are exempt from certain federal labour laws.In Atlanta, Monday’s long wait times come with less than three weeks remaining before the city hosts one of the world’s biggest sporting events. Super Bowl 53 on February 3 is expected to bring hordes of travellers to Atlanta for the game and days of concerts and related events.advertisement”We’re confident that we will be as efficient and as welcoming as people expect the city of Atlanta to be here at Hartsfield-Jackson for the Super Bowl,” Gobeil said. Also Read | Bird flies business class on Singapore Airlines flight. Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik as back-up for MS Dhoni for the 2019 Cricket World Cup? This decision is likely to weigh heavily on the Indian selectors’ minds when they meet with Virat Kohli to pick the World Cup squad but Harbhajan Singh reckons neither Pant nor Karthik has a place in the squad of 15.The Indian selection committee will meet on Monday to name the 15-man squad for the World Cup and Rishabh Pant is likely to win a berth but Harbhajan Singh said India should instead look at extra bowling options.Harbhajan, who is currently playing the 2019 Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings with MS Dhoni, said a back-up for Dhoni would be a waste of resources.”It’s not that Dhoni does not have niggles. Playing cricket with him I know he has some back issues but with his experience, he knows how to play with all that,” Harbhajan told India Today.”I don’t think you need any backup for Dhoni unless he suffers from any major injury during the World Cup. In case of any minor niggle, you do have KL Rahul in the squad who can keep,” Harbhajan said.”I know there is talk about Rishab Pant’s X factor but it appears the team management is convinced with Vijay Shankar to start as no.4. You could have gone with Ambati Rayudu but he has perhaps lost form recently which peg him back. KL Rahul would be my back-up batsman in the squad,”.This will be a long World Cup and the format of the tournament will be demanding especially after the Indian Premier League where all of India’s top stars are currently involved.advertisementKL Rahul is almost a certainty and Harbhajan Singh said he could don the wicketkeeping gloves in case MS Dhoni had to sit out with an injury. He can also bat and I would want a back up spinner for Chahal and Kuldeep, if one of them were to suffer an unfortunate injury for a week or two. You need a fourth specialist seamer in England too and Navdeep Saini would be my pick.”Not just because he has bowled well in IPL which in itself is creditable in Bangalore’s batting friendly wickets but also because he has won Ranji matches in the past, so he comes with domestic experience,” he said. Also Read | David Warner, Steve Smith back in Australia squad for 2019 World CupAlso Read | KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant await World Cup fateAlso See:

A confused R Ashwin walked up to umpire Shamshuddin to enquire about the lost ball. However, neither the players nor Shamshuddin were able to figure where the ball ahd gone. Leg-umpire Bruce Oxenford had to rush to clear the confusion but he too seemingly had no idea about the ball’s whereabouts. The confusion left AB de Villiers in splits. The fourth umpire then rushed onto the field with a new set of match balls. Even as the umpires decided to replace the lost ball, television replays played on the big screen. The replays showed Oxenford handing the match ball to Shamshuddin before the timeout. Shamsuddin was seen putting the ball into his pockets.advertisementRealising his slip up, Shamshuddin rushed to the centre of the pitch and handed the match ball to the bowler. The fourth umpire, with a set of new match balls, then hurried off the field before play resumed.MUST WATCH: Where’s the Ball? AB de Villiers joined the bandwagon of Royal Challengers Bangalore players, thanking the fans of the team who supported them through the highs and lows in this season of the Indian Premier League.Fans of the Royal Challengers supported the team till the very end despite Virat Kohli’s team failing to finish in the playoffs for the third year in a row. RCB was the first team to get knocked out of the playoffs race this season and will finish in last place if Kings XI Punjab win their final league game. The players of Royal Challengers Bangalore though, gave the fans something to cheer about as they hammered Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final match at the M Chinnaswamy stadium on Saturday.RCB defeated the 2016 champions by 4 wickets as they successfully chased down 175 thanks to the 144-run partnership between Shimron Hetmyer and Gurkeerat Singh Mann. The duo rescued the team from 20 for 3 in 2.5 overs and took them to safety before Hetmyer perished on 75, followed by Gurkeerat on 65. Crazy to see how close the margins are in this tournament. But it was a nice way to finish, there was a lot of talent we discovered this year.advertisement”Looking forward to next season, just want to thank everyone at the Chinnaswamy and the RCBians for supporting us through thick and thin,” AB de Villiers told RCB’s 12thMan TV host while leaving the Chinnaswamy for one final time this year.Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab are the remaining three teams who are remain in contention for the final playoff spot.SRH finished their league campaign on 12 points and are now tied with the Knight Riders, who will qualify for the knockouts if they win their final league game against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. But if KKR lose and Kings XI win their final match against Chennai Super Kings by a huge margin and reach 12 points, then the Punjab-based team will go through if they end up with a superior net run rate than SRH and KKR.Also Read | High time we did something for the crowd: Gurkeerat Singh after RCB winAlso Read | IPL 2019 Playoff Scenarios: KKR, SRH and KXIP in three-way battle for last spotAlso Read | IPL 2019: I feel your pain, Virat Kohli thanks RCB fans after consolation winAlso Read | IPL 2019: RCB stun SRH to end unsuccessful campaign with a win
South Africa captain Faf du Plessis struck a fluent 88 as his side eased to an 87-run victory over Sri Lanka in a Cricket World Cup warm-up game at Sophia Gardens on Friday.South Africa were sent in to bat in the training match, which did not hold official One-Day International status, and posted 338 for seven, before bowling their opponents out for 251 in 42.3 overs. The Proteas were without fast bowler Dale Steyn, who is not fit after a re-occurrence of his shoulder problem, but were carried to the win by seamer Lungi Ngidi (2-12 in six overs) and all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo (4-36 in 7 overs).Ngidi reduced Sri Lanka to 10 for two but excellent half centuries from captain Dimuth Karunaratne (87 from 92 balls) and Angelo Mathews (64 from 66 balls) kept the sub-continent side in the contest. The run-rate kept rising, though, and both batsmen were caught in the deep trying to accelerate the innings, with the guile of Phehlukwayo in particular stifling the chase.South Africa will be relieved with runs at the top of the order for opener Hashim Amla as he reached 65 from 61 balls before being bowled by leg-break bowler Jeevan Mendis. That may earn him the nod ahead of Aiden Markram (21) for South Africa’s World Cup opener against England on Thursday, with the pair vying for a place alongside Quinton de Kock, who did not bat on Friday.Du Plessis looked in superb touch for his 88 from 69 balls, which included four sixes before he skied a delivery from Dhananjaya de Silva and was caught.advertisementSeveral the other South African batsmen got starts but no-one else posted a half-century, though Rassie van der Dussen (40) and Phehlukwayo (35) enjoyed their visits to the crease. Also Read | World Cup 2019: Afghanistan hand Pakistan 3-wicket defeat in 1st warm-up matchAlso See:
US President Donald Trump saved himself from an embarrassing moment during his meeting with Britain’s Queen Elizabeth at the Buckingham Palace in London on June 3. Courtesy, his wife Melania Trump. While taking a tour of the royal artwork, Trump was shown a pewter horse that he had presented to the Queen in 2018 during his visit to Windsor. The President, however, failed to recognise it.Soon after, Melania interjected and told her husband that they had gifted the pewter horse to the Queen. Reporters covering the trip told an international website that Trump and Melania spotted the horse while exploring artefacts from the Royal Collection in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace. That Trump couldn’t recognise the horse, placed on a red table, was told to the website by Tim Knox, the Royal Collection’s director. The Pewter Horse, presented to the Queen by the Trumps. Barcelona have announced that they have signed French forward Antoine Griezmann on a five-season contract. The announcement came after the player’s international representatives paid his 120-million-euro buyout clause included in his contract with Atletico Madrid at the LaLiga offices, reports Efe news.”FC Barcelona has paid the 120 million euro buyout clause to release Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid,” the Catalan club said in a statement on its website on Friday.”The player will sign a contract with his new club for the next five seasons, through to 30 June 2024, with a buyout clause of 800 million euros.”The 28-year-old could be unveiled to the media and fans during the weekend so that he can join the team for the first pre-season training session scheduled for July 15.This is Barcelona’s third signing for the new season, following midfielder Frenkie de Jong on a move from Ajax and goalkeeper Neto who joined Barcelona from Valencia. It came a year after Griezmann turned down an offer by Barcelona and his refusal was revealed in a controversial documentary produced by Barcelona-s Spain defender Gerard Pique. He preferred to stay at Atletico and renew his contract with the capital team, an agreement that included a substantial salary raise. However, it did not close the door for his potential departure as the 200-million-euro buyout clause was reduced to 120 million as of July 1.Twelve days later, Griezmann became a Barcelona player. Also Read | Sunil Chhetri named AIFF Player of the Year for a record 6th timeAlso Read | Zlatan Ibrahimovic has no place for others but himself in his Dream XIAlso See:advertisement

4. West VirginiaPros: You could sacrifice a live animal on campus during your first day of class and your coach wouldn’t even blink.Cons: If you ever lose a game, your coach might sacrifice you on campus. Live.Verdict: You could pick about 115 worse offenses to play in over the next five years. The BCS games will wane, but (and I can’t believe I’m saying this) WVU is one of the more stable destinations for anyone wanting to play in the Big 12 because they’re recruiting kids from West Virginia, Pennsylvania etc. that other schools can’t reach.3. Oklahoma StatePros: Best facilities in the league, only team to win a Big 12 title besides the two ahead of it since 2003, you get to fraternize with a billionaire.Cons: Stillwater isn’t exactly, um, Austin, still doesn’t have a big time stadium (attendance-wise), you have to fraternize with a billionaire.Verdict: You get the big time college football experience without all the unfulfilling media frills that come with it (for now). And possible BCS bowl wins.2. OUPros: Stoops is outstanding, NFL factory, high-paying summer jobs.Cons: Bowl games.Verdict: It’s no longer the #1 draw in the state, but it’s pretty hard for a kid to come watch 85,000 people watch and scream for his future teammates and then say “nahhhh, I’m good.”Photo Attribution: Icon SMI1. TexasPros: Best uniforms in the league (and possibly country) and if you’re a QB and can throw it over 10 yards in the air, you have a chance to start.Cons: Expectations. 9-3 in Waco equals illicit drinking. 9-3 in Stillwater equals sold out bowl game. 9-3 in Austin equals WTF happened?!Verdict: It’s still Texas, and if Mack calls, you come. Just hope your relatives are amongst the dozens of Longhorn Network subscribers. There are dozens of us!* – Not sure what a “middling three star” is…If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. You can go there to comment and holler about these articles, specifically in these threads. You can register for a free account right here and will need one to comment. If you’re wondering why we decided to do this, we wrote about that here. Thank you and cheers! On this matter of recruiting, it would be difficult for me (for anyone really) to get inside the heads of these kids to see what truly matters most to them. Rivals did a pretty interesting anecdotal study on what recruits like to hear from coaches but that’s just one of a legion of factors that go into this combustible, moving target that is recruiting analysis. So let’s do this instead. How about if I was a recruit, a speedy defensive back or a monstrous offensive lineman for example, where in the Big 12 would I want to go right now and why? Here are my ten destinations in a very particular order:10. KansasPros: Uhh, your coach used to touch Tom Brady’s back side every other day or so.Cons: You have a track encircling your field, nobody can take you seriously outside of hoops, and your AD let the best thing he had going walk out on him.Verdict: I go here if my other call is from Dennis Franchione at Texas State.9. Texas TechPros: Your coach used to coach in the nation’s best conference, QBs from your school hold 998 of the top 1000 total passing yards in a game totals in NCAA history.Cons: You gave up 66 points twice last season.Verdict: If you’re a QB or aspiring western actor, sure, anybody else can find six better schools in the state to attend.8. Iowa StatePros: You’re going to be on ESPN a LOT. Sure it might be in the background of a Paul Rhoads speech, but still..Cons: Currently has three fewer NFL players than Hampton, the same number as Harvard, and one more than Idaho State.Verdict: Paul Rhoads is the real deal. If I was a middling two or three star* and could either sit at Iowa or play at Iowa State, I’m headed to Ames.7. BaylorPros: More Heisman trophies since 2000 than everyone in the league but OU…combined.Cons: More losses since 2000 than everyone in the league…by far.Verdict: Art Briles is the real deal and with A&M ousted, Baylor and TCU have risen to second string in the state for all of Texas’ leftovers.6. TCUPros: Total defense rank the past five years: 32-1-1-1-15. Seems adequate.Cons: You have to do this for four years.Verdict: If you’re a top-flight defensive player and you see Patterson’s record…why wouldn’t you go there?Photo Attribution: Icon SMI5. Kansas StatePros: You apparently don’t have to be that intelligent to play the skillz positions in Manhattan, or so say Michael Bishop’s Wonderlic results.Cons: Your coach is quadruple your age.Verdict: I’m not sure anyone can handle purple Kansas, save Snyder (see Prince, Ron). And Snyder can’t coach forever. But still, for the next four or five years you’re probably going to at least have a shot at one (or more) Big 12 titles and you get to play in front of some of the best fans in the country.
