Mining deal boost for SA coal output

first_img28 August 2013 South Africa’s Keaton Energy has made an offer to acquire Australian-listed Xceed Resources’ coal projects in Moabsvelden, Roodepoort and Bankfontein in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province for approximately R183-million. The deal is expected to significantly boost Keaton Energy’s annual Eskom-quality coal output, as well as offer the firm the opportunity to enter the export thermal coal market. “The acquisition is consistent with Keaton Energy’s strategy of strengthening its position of becoming a 5Mtpa [million tonnes per annum] producer,” Keaton chief executive officer Mandi Glad said in a statement on Monday. “The Xceed transaction reflects our strong belief in the South African coal industry and the growth of the group bodes well for Keaton’s continued delivery of records across mining, processing, sales and cash generation.” Xceed is an Australian public company primarily involved in the exploration and development of thermal coal projects in South Africa. It will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Keaton Energy and will be unlisted from the Australian Securities Exchange once the deal is concluded and regulatory conditions have been fulfilled. Moabsvelden hosts a 65.3-million tonne thermal coal resource, a 44-million tonne run of mine open pit reserve and an approved mining right. The mine open pit has a 15-year lifespan and produces mostly Eskom coal, with a small fraction for export. It is also only three kilometres from Keaton’s existing Vanggatfontein Colliery. The Roodepoort mine hosts a 29.3-million tonne open-castable coal resource and Bankfontein hosts a 13.7-million tonne predominantly underground coal resource. Keaton’s open-castable coal resource will increase by 100-million tonnes, as well as increase the run of mine coal reserve in the Vanggatfontein Colliery area by about 44-million tonnes. “This is an exciting opportunity to deliver real value to our shareholders through increased Eskom coal production at a time when the industry is abuzz with Eskom’s impending coal supply shortfall,” Glad said. “The transaction also provides Keaton with the opportunity to participate in the export thermal coal market for the first time. We are pleased that our major shareholder is aligned with our vision for the company, supports our growth strategy and advocates the development of the South African coal industry.” SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Cardale Jones to pick up the rifle with Barrett out for season

Redshirt-freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett (16) is carted away after suffering a right ankle fracture during the 4th quarter of a game against Michigan on Nov. 29 at Ohio Stadium. OSU won, 42-28. Credit: Chelsea Spears / Multimedia editorFor the second time in less than four months, the Ohio State football team will have to turn to its backup quarterback.Redshirt-freshman quarterback and Heisman candidate J.T. Barrett suffered a broken ankle during the second half of OSU’s 42-28 win over the Michigan Wolverines Saturday afternoon, forcing redshirt-sophomore Cardale Jones into action in The Game.Barrett is scheduled to have surgery Sunday, and will miss the remainder of the season.OSU co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tom Herman said after the game he did not envision losing two possible Heisman candidates at the same position to injury in the same year.“I wouldn’t have asked for that,” he said. “This game is very crazy at times, throws you a lot of curveballs and you have to be able to adapt and adjust and I am sure we will be able to do that.”Senior tight end Jeff Heuerman, who was on the field when Barrett’s injury occurred, said, at first, he didn’t think the injury was severe.“I heard him yell, and I looked over…at first I thought he just got his bell rung (but) as soon as everyone got off of him, I just went over there and as soon as I saw his ankle…he (Barrett) didn’t realize it at first,” Heuerman said. “That is when I told him ‘you need to stay down for a second.’”With Barrett out for the season, Jones is set to make his first career start as a Buckeye next week in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Glenville High School product entered Saturday having attempted just 14 passes, eight of which were completed for 111 yards and two scores through the air.Jones finished the win over Michigan two for three on pass attempts for seven yards and added another 18 yards rushing on two carries.Herman said he was pleased with how Jones responded in such an intense atmosphere.“Great mentally. He missed the one pass to (redshirt-sophomore wide receiver Michael) Thomas, but mentally he was very in tune,” Herman said. “He keeps a headset on the entire game so he is in tuned to everything we are talking about. He is very engaged in everything that goes on in terms of in-between series adjustments, halftime adjustments, so he was ready to go.”OSU coach Urban Meyer said following the win that the Buckeyes will start preparing for the Big Ten Championship Game on Sunday, adding that the game plan won’t be adjusted that much with Jones at the helm.“We gotta go and we have a lot of confidence in the guy that’s going to be doing it, his name is Cardale Jones. He’s been here I think for 120 years,” Meyer said jokingly. “The good thing is they (Barrett and Jones) have a similar skill set and so it’s not like we’re going to have to drastically change things.”Sophomore safety Vonn Bell, who started the game with an interception on the second play from scrimmage, said the Buckeyes will continue to move forward with Barrett out.“We lost one of our soldiers today,” Bell said after the game. “Somebody has to pick up the rifle and keep on going.”Herman said after the game that although Barrett is out for the season, he does not want to discount the win over Michigan.“We are really, really happy for this team. You are happy for what we have accomplished in the regular season, you are happy to beat our rival at home and get a third pair of gold pants,” Herman said. “At the same time, your heart goes out to J.T. because he has not only meant so much to this team, but this team has meant so much to him and his growth as a young man. We will keep him involved as much as we can, and move forward.”Herman said that he believes the Buckeyes can still be successful with Jones, OSU’s third-string quarterback coming into the season.“The quarterback doesn’t have to win games for us anymore. The quarterback has to manage games, distribute the football and lead,” Herman said. “We have seen that throughout this season and so as long as he is mentally prepared…I have nothing but the utmost confidence that he (Jones) can get the job done because of what we have got around him.”One of those players will be sophomore running back Ezekiel Elliott, who rushed for 121 yards and two scores against Michigan Saturday on just 17 carries.Redshirt-sophomore quarterback Cardale Jones (12) carries the ball during a game against Michigan on Nov. 29 at Ohio Stadium. Jones replaced an injured redshirt-freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett in the fourth quarter of OSU’s 42-28 win. Credit: Mark Batke / Photo editorElliott said after the win that he believes Jones’ experience in the off-season will help him moving forward.“He got a lot of reps in the spring, he got plenty of reps this fall, I think he is ready,” Elliott said. “I don’t think there will be a drop-off.”As another one of the offensive weapons, Heuerman said he believes Herman will be able to coach Jones to success.“Coach Herman has obviously already been through this. Offensively man, we have a lot of talented guys that have played a lot of football this year. They are going to have to step up and make up for lost ground,” Heuerman said. “Cardale is an outstanding athlete, has a super strong arm. He can make the big plays we need to get this team rolling. We are going to have to rely on him, offensively and as a team.”The Buckeyes are set to travel to Indianapolis to take on Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game Dec. 6. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. read more

BLS Houstons Mean Wages Higher Than National Average

first_img To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Listen Florian Martin/Houston Public MediaHouston skyline from southThe mean wage for Houston is about seven percent above the national average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The BLS has released its annual Occupational Employment and Wages report for the Houston area. The mean wage means half earn more and half earn less. It’s often taken as the “average,” but could be an over or under-estimation because of extremes in the data. The report contains employment and wage information for 22 major occupational groups and more than 700 jobs for Houston, The Woodlands and Sugar Land.Cheryl Abbot is a regional economist with the Dallas office of BLS. “It is higher than the national — in Houston, the mean for all workers was $25.42 an hour, seven percent higher than the national average of $23.86 an hour,” she said. This is a snapshot of May 2016, and it takes a full year to crunch the numbers because the report is so detailed. “The wages ranged from $11.35 an hour in food prep. We saw $79.74 an hour for petroleum engineers,” she said.   Houston employment is more highly concentrated in five of the 22 occupational groups, including construction and extraction, architecture and engineering, transportation and material moving.center_img X 00:00 /01:13 Sharelast_img read more

Minimum Wage is Going Up

first_imgEfforts to raise both the federal and state minimum wage continued this month. At the federal level, information from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reported a change could have wide-reaching positive and negative effects. “The $10.10 option would have substantially larger effects on employment and income than the $9.00 option would – because more workers would see their wages rise; the change in their wages would be greater,” concluded the CBO in their 39-page report. “Once fully implemented in the second half of 2016, the $10.10 option would reduce total employment by about 500,000 workers, or 0.3 percent.” Even though 500,000 could become unemployed as employers decrease their work force to increase the minimum wage, a total of 900,000 people would move to the positive side of the poverty threshold, where 45 million people are currently making less than $23,550 a year for a family of four. With the $9 option, the CBO found that anywhere from 100,000 to 1 million people could end up unemployed. However, roughly 7.6 million low-wage earners would see an increase totaling about $1 billion extra dollars for families living in poverty. With the $9 option, 300,000 people would be lifted out of their current economic situation below the poverty threshold. Though the minimum wage debate may seem new, the fight for a livable wage has been repeated since 1938, when the Fair Labor Standards Act set a minimum wage for workers at 25 cent. It has been revised, amended, and broadened numerous times, and now includes service workers, retail, transit, construction, health employees, and many others. “During the 1960s a full-time minimum wage income was enough to keep a family of three above the federal poverty line,” said David Cooper, an analyst with the Economic Policy Institute, who testified Feb. 17 in front of the Maryland Senate. “Today’s minimum wage of $7.25 is worth about 23 percent less than what it was worth in the late 1960s. The value of the minimum wage at its high point in 1968 equaled about $9.40 in today’s dollars. Cooper said an increase could positively affect the entire economy. “More broadly, when you raise the minimum wage, what you’re essentially doing is shifting income from business owners or corporations to low-wage workers,” Cooper told the AFRO. “We know that low-wage workers are more likely spend every additional dollar that they receive just because they have to in order to pay their bills. You’re transferring money from entities less likely to spend it and more likely to save it, to entities more likely to spend it all right away. That actually can boost consumer spending and provide a modest boost to overall economic growth.” In Maryland’s General Assembly, both the House and Senate are working on measures to increase the federal minimum wage for workers. In Montgomery and Prince George’s counties lawmakers have already decided to raise the minimum wage to $11.50. Del. Aisha Braveboy, who sponsored HB 187, said lawmakers are working out problems with the bill, but believes it will get a committee vote by early to mid-March and then proceed to the House floor. Issues being addressed are how to deal with counties that have already adjusted their minimum wage, how Maryland will handle inflation, and a better system to compensate workers who earn tips. Currently, employees who earn tips are paid 50 percent of the minimum wage.”In theory, the employee would make up the rest of that in tips,” Braveboy said before acknowledging that tips don’t always add up. “The proposal is to raise that credit to 70 percent of the minimum wage. Instead of the employer paying 50 percent they would pay 70 percent.” While lawmakers haggle over details, a group of 19 business owners in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area isn’t waiting for laws to force a pay increase. In a move focused on helping their employees earn livable wages, members of the President’s Roundtable, a group of minority business owners, announced plans to raise the minimum wage for their employees – even if a bill isn’t passed. “We want to be very clear that this is not a political for us – it’s a human rights issue,” said Sheila Brooks, leader of the President’s Roundtable. “Of the 19 members, we have more than 1,200 employees collectively. Each and every one of us did agree to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour by 2015 in support of House Bill 187.” Brooks is the founder and operator of SRB Communications, a communications agency, but one-third of the Roundtable members are contractors, employing hundreds of blue-collar construction workers. “We want to lead the way so that we can hopefully inspire other businesses to pay the living wage. We would like to challenge other business owners – particularly minority business owners – to do what’s right for their community, for the economy, and our country, that is to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.”last_img read more

Rep Lucido testifies on bill allowing parents to better protect their children

first_imgState Rep. Peter Lucido testified before the House Families, Children, and Seniors Committee in support of a bill to allow parents and guardians to better protect their families by legally allowing them to monitor their minor children’s phone conversationsState Rep. Peter Lucido today testified before the House Families, Children and Seniors Committee in support of his bill allowing parents and guardians to better protect their families by legally allowing them to monitor their minor children’s phone conversations.Under current law, it is illegal to overhear, record, amplify, or transmit private conversations without the permission of everyone involved, regardless of their age.Lucido’s bill confirms the right of parents, foster parents and guardians to monitor their children’s phone calls until they turn 18 and are no longer legally responsible for their behavior.“Parents, foster parents, and guardians must be trusted to do what is in their child’s best interest,” said Lucido, of Shelby Township.  “While that certainly varies based on the child, knowing who their children are talking to should not be illegal.”Lucido said parents, foster parents, and guardians are and should be responsible for their children and the opportunity to listen to the conversations is a good way to prevent children from serious danger. In Michigan, it’s legal for a participant in a conversation to record it, but not a third party who is not a part of the conversation.House Bill 4891 remains under consideration by the House Families, Children, and Seniors Committee.### Categories: Lucido News 05Oct Rep.
