Hall as he explores the nature and advantages of civility throughout history and in our world today. The aim is to expand our understanding of civility as related to larger social forces—including revolution, imperialism, capitalism, nationalism, and war—and the ways that such elements limit the potential for civility. Combining wide-ranging historical and comparative evidence with social and moral theory, Hall examines how the nature of civility has fluctuated in the last three centuries, how it became lost, and how it was re-established in the second half of the twentieth century following the two world wars. He also considers why civility is currently breaking down and what can be done to mitigate this threat.  Facilitator Keith West will lead a discussion after the online lecture. The discussion will explore how these concepts effect our daily lives, and what actions we can take as individuals.  We’ll identify and grapple with different experiences and perspectives and reinforce the idea that disagreement need not lead to disrespect. TRAI to Check Telcos Call Tariffs to Verify Unjustified Gains in Call

first_imgIn view of increasing call drops in the country, the government has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to look into the voice tariffs of telcos to verify whether there are any unjustified gains to the telecom companies from call drops. The government also told the telecom operators “not to divert spectrum capacity towards profit-intensive data services at the cost of voice calls,” The Times of India reported.Chief executives of Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Idea and Reliance Communications on Monday said that the “spectrum and tower shortages” are the major reasons for the increasing call drops. They are also demanding a uniform tower policy.”We need a uniform national tower policy which can be implemented nationally and not just guidelines,” Idea Cellular MD Himanshu Kapania told IBN Live. When asked whether there will be an increase in call drops in future, Vodafone India MD & CEO Sunil Sood said, “If you don’t get a tower policy, yes, it will.”Hitting back at the reasons cited by the telcos, the government said on Tuesday that “these cannot be the basis for providing poor services.””Trai will examine all tariff plans and packages to see if telecom companies get incentives out of call drops. If that is the case, then we will see whether it is possible that such packages are not there,” said Rakesh Garg, secretary at the telecom ministry. The government has taken a serious note of the issue as call drops have been on the rise despite the telecom companies being warned many times. The government may also make compensation for call drops as “mandatory” for the telecom operators, Garg said.”Some (telecom) companies have a system to give a call free for every dropped call. This measure proves to be a disincentive for operators when they provide deficient services. We have requested Trai to see whether we can make this practice mandatory for all telecom service providers,” he said.last_img read more

Saaho teaser launch announcement Secret behind the release of Shraddha Kapoors poster

first_imgShraddha Kapoor’s first looks from SaahoTwitterThe makers of Saaho starring Prabhas have released the first look poster of actress Shraddha Kapoor to announce its teaser launch date, which has raised doubt about their intention behind it.UV Creations, which is bankrolling Saaho, announced on June 10 that its teaser would be launched in June. The producer tweeted the first look of Shraddha Kapoor and wrote, “The action BEGINS Enter the world of #SAAHO with the teaser on 13th June. Experience it in theaters from 14th June! #Prabhas @ShraddhaKapoor @sujeethsign @UV_Creations #SaahoTeaser #15AugWithSaaho.”The trend in the industry is that a hero gets the main focus during any big announcement of his movies. But surprisingly, the makers of Saaho proved to be an exception to this trend. They decided to highlight actress Shraddha Kapoor and released her poster, which did not feature Baahubali actor Prabhas. This decision of the makers of Saaho has definitely upset many fans of Prabhas. One of his fans wrote, “Announcement poster, darling dhi raaledhani feel avuthunna vallaki… It’s his decision and, i respect it Btw we’re going to get the biggest treat on 13th & 14th #SaahoTeaser #Saaho.”The makers of Saaho have released the first look and few posters of Prabhas to announce the release date of recently. But they have not unveiled the first look of Shraddha Kapoor until the above-mentioned announcement was made. They were apparently under pressure from the fans of the actress, who is one of the most popular heroines. Hence, they might have released one. However, the makers’ decision has kept many people thinking about their intention behind this act. Partha announces extension of CU admission deadline to August 20 in bid

first_imgKolkata: State Education minister Partha Chatterjee on Tuesday announced extension of dates for students’ admission in some of the affiliated colleges of Calcutta University, where seats are lying vacant. The deadline for admission has been extended till August 20.”Wherever there are vacant seats, be it in pass or degree courses, the admission process will continue till August 20. The secretary of the undergraduate (UG) council at CU has been directed to send necessary instructions to the concerned colleges,” Chatterjee said, after attending the 103rd foundation day celebration of Asutosh College in Hazra. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeHe reiterated that admission will be strictly on the basis of merit and students have to pay the requisite fees to the bank accounts of the colleges in which they are seeking admission. According to sources, Chatterjee held a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the status of vacant seats in colleges. It may be mentioned that out of 1.3 lakh seats in various CU affiliated colleges, around 40,000 are still lying vacant. The earlier deadline for admission was July 10 and the university found that seats were lying vacant at Surendranath College, Jaipuria College, South City College, Dinabandhu Andrews College, Sris Chandra college, North City College and Seth Surjamal Jalan College to name a few. The colleges had already written to CU, urging it to extend the dates for admission. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedProdded by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the state Higher Education department has instructed all colleges in the state to admit students through the online mode, so that they no longer need to turn up physically for the purpose. The police also cracked the whip and arrested a number of people, including students, for being involved in extorting money to grant admission.Chatterjee in the past had often been vocal about the tendency among students in crowding a handful of educational institutions in the state. He had warned the colleges of strong action if they admit students beyond their intake capacity. Asked about his response to the reintroduction of admission tests in Jadavpur University, Chatterjee said, “It (JU) is an autonomous institution. The government won’t interfere in its functioning.”JU had recently witnessed a hunger strike by students in protest against the decision of the authorities to scrap admission test in six Humanities subjects. A section of teachers had also lent support to the students. The university finally yielded to the pressure and reintroduced entrance tests for the 6 subjects last week.last_img read more

Why You Dont Need a Digital Detox to Loosen Technologys Grip

first_imgAugust 7, 2013 Do you find yourself checking your smartphone constantly? Do you look at your email and Twitter feed even before your morning shower? If you answered yes to these questions, Psychologist and California State University Professor, Dr. Larry Rosen says you may have an iDisorder — an addiction to technology. In his book iDisorder: Understanding our Obsession with Technology and Overcoming its Hold on Us, (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) Rosen says our over-reliance on technology induces behaviors similar to those of anxiety-based psychological disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder. While we may assume technology is making us more productive, Rosen says tech-related anxiety (that feeling that you can never be without your smartphone) is counterproductive, not to mention bad for our emotional and physical health. “If we’re anxious, that means the brain doesn’t have enough processing power to really do a good job at what we’re supposed to be doing,” says Rosen. But you don’t have to give up technology completely to recover from your overdependence. Restoring balance to your overloaded, tech-obsessed brain can be achieved with a few simple steps.1. Give your brain a break. Just as a computer can overheat, our brains can get overloaded by our use of technology. To calm down the brain, Rosen recommends taking a break every 90 minutes. A ten-minute walk outdoors, meditation, exercise, listening to music or even having a laugh with a colleague is enough to reset your brain.2. Implement “tech breaks” into meetings. More often than not, we’re obsessively checking our smartphones because we’re anxious about missing something, not because we need to urgently respond to something. The key to overcoming this tech-related anxiety, according to Rosen, is to implement “technology breaks” in meetings. Begin by allowing everyone to check their devices for one to two minutes, then put the devices on silent, placing them screen-down on the table and set a timer for 15 minutes.Related: The 18-Minute Ritual That Will Boost Your ProductivityHaving the device within visual range is critical as it sends a signal to the brain to not be anxious. Rosen says simply knowing you will be able to check the device in under 15 minutes seems to relieve anxiety. When the alarm rings, everyone is allowed one to two minutes to check their devices before repeating the process. The 15 minute timer can gradually be increased to 20, 25 and eventually 30 minutes. “The idea is you’re trying to train the brain not to release those neurotransmitters that signify anxiety,” says Rosen, who has used this technique with great success in classrooms, boardrooms and even family dinner tables.3. Minimize distractions. “Electronic communications tend to distract people every three to five minutes,” says Rosen. He says checking email and social media repeatedly are anxious responses that cause us to lose productivity. To minimize these distractions, Rosen recommends checking email every 15 or 30 minutes and turning off notifications in the times in between. Having set times during the day for checking email or social media updates helps to minimize distractions and helps ease tech-related anxiety throughout the day.Related: 5 Ways to Control Your Email Inbox Register Now » Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right.
