Women’s Soccer Hosts UNI Tuesday Night

first_imgDES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women’s soccer team hosts UNI on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a key in-state Missouri Valley Conference match. Following Tuesday’s match, Drake visits Evansville on Oct. 21 for a 2:30 p.m. game. UNI has 10 wins this year which is already the program’s record for most wins in a single season. The Panthers are coached by Bruce Erickson, who is in his first season as head coach. Drake and UNI have battled to three consecutive draws in the past three seasons. Drake is coming off a 3-0 victory over Indiana State on Saturday in its lone action last week. The win was well deserved for the Bulldogs as the match was initially played Friday night but was postponed just 18 minutes in due to an unplayable field at Cownie after heavy rains and lightning hit the Des Moines area. The match was moved to Saturday afternoon and to Valley High School in West Des Moines, and despite chilly temperatures and a constant rain during the match, Drake broke open a scoreless affair in the 75th minute to earn their sixth straight win. Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) recorded two goals against the Sycamores and has scored 10 goals in the past seven matches. Senior Kasey Hurt (Ankeny, Iowa) scored her first goal of the season. Hurt scored the first goal Friday night in the third minute, but it didn’t count due to the postponement. The midweek contest features two of the top teams in the MVC. Drake (9-3-1, 2-0-0 MVC) is second in the league standings behind Loyola while UNI (10-2-1, 2-1-0 MVC) is in third place. Evansville (4-9-0, 0-3-0 MVC) has dropped its last five matches. The Purple Aces edged the Bulldogs, 1-0, last season in Des Moines. The all-time series between the programs is tied at 10-10. Following Saturday’s match, Drake continues its road trip at Missouri State on Oct. 17. Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
