GRDB to conduct aerial spraying for paddy bugs

first_imgThe Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) is soon to commence aerial spraying for paddy bugs in Regions Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), Four (Demerara-Mahaica), Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).Despite experiencing heavy losses due to the paddy bugs’ infestation in the last two crops, no aerial spraying will be conducted in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).Rice farmers on the picket line at Number 56 Village on Thursday demanding aerial spraying for paddy bugsThe decision was made after rice farmers on the Corentyne, Region Six, continued their picketing exercise for a third day on Thursday, demanding that the GRDB conduct aerial spraying for the bugs which cost the region to lose more than a billion dollars last crop.Despite the advice of an international expert against this method, the farmers continued their protest.President of Guyana Rice Producers Association (PRA) Leekha Rambrich told this publication that aerial spraying to combat the dreaded paddy bugs will not be carried out in Region Two because most of the cultivations are within close proximity to residential areas. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had advised the GRDB against conducting aerial spraying with toxic chemicals in that region.General Manager of the GRDB, Nezam Hassan told <<>> that the exercise of aerial spraying to combat the paddy bugs will commence in Region Six.Meanwhile, rice farmers on the Corentyne continued their picketing exercise outside of the GRDB’s Seed Paddy Drying Facility at Number 56 Village even as the GRDB agreed to have aerial spraying in the region to stop the infestation. The farmers resorted to this after the General Manager of the Rice Board had done nothing on instructions to carry out aerial spraying o save the rice crop.Seeta Shiwpersaud, who cultivates one thousand acres at Moleson Creek, told Guyana Times that she had to apply insecticides to her crop seven times for the bugs. Each application, she said, cost about $100,000.According to her, the GRDB’s extension officers on the ground had been providing incorrect information to the office. She said extension officers visited her field at 10:00h to look for the bugs after she had reported a massive infestation at Moleson Creek. She said the officers found five insects and reported that there was infestation there. However, according to the farmer, the extension officers are aware that the bugs mainly become visible at daybreak and in the evening around dusk and not when the sun is up.Meanwhile, another rice farmer, Hemraj Babulall, who has 500 acres under cultivation along the central Corentyne Coast, said some of the pesticides which are being sold are ineffective on the paddy bugs.“The chemicals are no good,” he said. The rice farmer pointed an accusing finger at the Pesticide Board for allowing those chemicals to be sold on the market. The RPA President told this publication that some rice farmers are in the habit of purchasing chemicals from unrecognised importers and have been experiencing little or no results. He is advising that they purchase from the established dealers.Rambrich, who is also a member of the GRDB Board, said the Board met on Wednesday to once again discuss the issue of the infestation of the bugs in the rice-producing regions. The GRDB last week said that it received assistance from its international partner, the Latin American Fund for Irrigated Rice, also known as FLAR, to tackle the current infestation of paddy bugs. The two-man team from FLAR consists of entomologist and researcher, Dr Ed Pulver along with agricultural engineer Santiago Jaramillo Cardona.More than 62,000 acres are under rice cultivation in Region Six. The cultivation areas are Moleson Creek, Crabwood Creek, the 52-74 area, Black Bush Polder, Central Corentyne, East and West Canje and the East Bank.last_img read more

Blatter awarded National Orders

(Image: Bongani Nkosi)MEDIA CONTACTS• Vincent MagwenyaThe Presidency+27 12 300 5315or +27 82 835 [email protected] NkosiSouth Africa has honoured Fifa president Sepp Blatter for backing the bid to host the 2010 Football World Cup in Africa, making this year’s edition a first for the continent, and a significant milestone in the history of the tournament.Blatter was one of the 36 local and international achievers to be given National Orders by President Jacob Zuma on 27 April, Freedom Day in South Africa. The orders also went to various prominent South Africans in various spheres, including anti-apartheid activism, education and science. The 74-year-old Blatter was awarded gold in the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo, one of most prestigious of the six categories, which recognises foreigners who have supported South Africa’s aspirations to make a name for itself internationally. The award also recognises the Fifa president’s “exceptional contribution” to football. He will receive his award at a ceremony in July.“We will have the opportunity to bestow this prestigious Order on a friend of South Africa, Joseph Sepp Blatter,” Zuma said, “for his outstanding leadership of world football, and his support of our country in hosting the greatest soccer spectacle of all times”.The eighth Fifa president since its inception in 1904, Blatter is credited for introducing the rotation policy, which gave all six continental confederations a chance to host the World Cup tournament. However, Fifa has decided to scrap the system after 2018.“When I became president in 1998, my greatest goal was to see the Fifa World Cup played in Africa,” he wrote on the Fifa website on 23 April. “It would never have been possible without our rotation policy.”Even before his first year as president was up, Blatter called for the rotation policy to give Africa a chance to stage the event. Amid protests from a number of football unions in Europe, Blatter campaigned for months to convince Fifa members to support the policy.Inspired by Blatter’s confidence in the continent, South Africa made a firm bid for the 2006 Fifa World Cup, but it lost to Germany by a single vote after one Fifa member abstained. But the country’s spirit was not dampened, as it made another bid, this time successfully, for the 2010 tournament. Many South Africans, including former president Nelson Mandela, shed tears of joy when Blatter announced in May 2004 that the country would host the 2010 edition. This was the realisation of a dream, both for Africa and Blatter.“It’s taken a long time, but ultimately it means justice for Africa, and for everything Africa has done for football in the past,” he said.Swiss-born Blatter has tirelessly defended South Africa’s ability to be a safe, world-class host amid widespread scepticism. His mantra is: “Africa’s time has come” to show the world what it’s capable of. “This Fifa World Cup will be a success,” he has said.“We have no doubts whatsoever in our ability to organise a secure tournament. Eleven million tourists visit South Africa every year, so why should people stop coming because it’s the World Cup?”The country has spent billions of rands to prepare for the spectacle, which starts in 41 days. It has revamped its public infrastructure and built many impressive stadiums. The government has repeatedly stated that it’s ready for the crowds that will flock to South Africa between June and July.Honouring African heroesConfederation of African Footballpresident Issa Hayatou was also honoured with gold in the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo. Zuma said Hayatou was recognised “for his excellent contribution to the development of African football”.In the same category, Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos received gold for his “exceptional” role in the fight against apartheid and the support of liberation movements in Southern Africa. The Order of Ikhamanga, which recognises those who have excelled in the arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport, went to local artists Hugh Masekela, Nothembi Mkhwebane, Jonas Gwangwa and Winston Ntshona.last_img read more

Where This Years Playoff Aces Rank In Franchise History

We’ve already seen some mighty impressive displays of pitching prowess in this year’s postseason, including Chicago Cubs hurler Jake Arrieta’s complete game shutout in the National League wild-card game last week and New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom’s seven-inning, 13-strikeout performance against the L.A. Dodgers on Friday. Not only have these performances been dominating, but a few of them even rank among the best playoff starts in their franchises’ histories. We can measure this using Game Score, a statistic that summarizes a pitcher’s value using his innings pitched, strikeouts, walks, hits and runs allowed. For each active playoff team, here are the best postseason starts since 19511The modern era of Retrosheet’s database files. (as rated by Game Score), with red dots denoting each franchise’s top game score of the time period and blue dots marking the best of this year.2We are considering only game scores greater than 70, in years since 1951, using data from’s Play Index. Teams whose best 2015 starts are below 70 don’t have blue dots in the chart. For a group of franchises all vying for baseball’s greatest prize, there’s been a pretty wide spread in the quality of their postseason pitching over the years. The Cubs are a case in point: Arrieta’s sublime showing in the play-in game rates as the single best game score in franchise history,3Including games outside of the sample we analyzed, going back to 1903. which is why the Cubs’ dot is purple. But that wasn’t exactly a high bar to clear. Chicago, like the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, hasn’t traditionally benefited from great starting pitching in the postseason.Meanwhile, franchises such as the Texas Rangers, headlined by Cliff Lee’s superb 2010 playoff run, and the Mets, with Tom Seaver dominating in 1969 and 1973, have been buoyed by plenty of masterful postseason starts over the years. And the single best postseason Game Score ever produced for these franchises belongs to the St. Louis Cardinals, in the form of Bob Gibson’s 1968 World Series Game 1 shutout (which featured an absurd 17 strikeouts against only one walk).Every team hopes to get that kind of transcendent pitching in the playoffs, though many of this year’s playoff teams have never seen anything close. But with the array of Cy Young candidates on the remaining teams, we may yet see a performance to rival Gibson’s famous start and rewrite a team’s postseason record book in the process. read more
