Ahead of Thursday’s Euro 2016 semi-final between France and Germany, check out this horror tackle from a meeting at the 1982 World Cup. It was West Germany v France at Sevilla’s Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, with the former winning 5-4 on penalties after a 3-3 draw. It is nearly 34 years to the day since goalkeeper Harald Schumacher clattered into France’s Patrick Battiston. As he made a late run from midfield into the box, the Frenchman hit the ball past the on-running shot-stopper, his effort going just wide of the post, but he was sent crashing to the ground. As he lay still on the ground, the goalkeeper was bemused, unaware of the seriousness of the challenge, as he stood ready to take the goal-kick – see above!Battiston was stretchered off in a neck brace and he lost three teeth and is said to still be struggling with back problems as a result of the collision.Goalkeeper Schumacher escaped without punishment, going on to be the shootout hero as he saved two penalties. The nations met two years later and the pair reportedly exchanged shirts in private after the game.
